Freshman English
English 1 and 1H
Today was our "Day of Pride." We spent about the last 15 minutes of each period talking about ways we can show PRIDE here at Cascade, and what showing PRIDE looks like. This was valuable time for all the students of CHS to learn behavior expectations. We spent the rest of the period taking a short quiz on the Article of the Week students were given last week. We will have a quiz on an article (almost) every Monday. HOMEWORK: Finish your Summer Reading if you haven't already done so. English 1 (per 3, 5, and 6)

A copy of the article can be located here. Note: Tomorrow is Arena Day. You will have your picture taken for your ID card, and have the opportunity to purchase a picture package. You will also have the chance to pay for ASB and buy a Yearbook. Pictures/Payments will take place during the second half of English class.

HOMEWORK/REMINDERS:
English 1 and 1H I enjoyed meeting all of you today. Thank you so much for showing up and being so energetic and engaging and eager to be a Bruin! I can already tell this is going to be a fantastic year! Today we made name tags, muddled through attendance, and received planners. Remember, the agenda is YOUR property, and you need to bring it to class every day. I'm expecting you to record activities, assignments, and due dates for ALL of your classes, so keep it handy, and be sure to look at it at home. This is the best way for you to stay organized and up-to-date on all of your school responsibilities. Feel free to record your outside-of-school activities as well. We also began discussing the idea of Coming-of-Age, and decided that it means events in our lives that lead toward becoming more mature or that lead to adulthood. We will continue to explore this idea throughout the school year. HOMEWORK:
We spent today getting everything ready for your arrival tomorrow. The freshman English teachers spent a couple hours working together to make sure you will all experience engaging and meaningful material every day during the first couple of weeks. We discussed lessons, scheduled activities, and even bartered and traded furniture, all in hopes of making tomorrow perfect! We can't wait to meet you!
Fortunately, all of our *required* meetings took place last week, so we were free to work and clean and plan as we wished today. However... I would have been willing to attend this particular meeting. What do you all think? The World's Best Staff Meeting Teacher Prep, Day 2
We spent a lot of time learning about stress and its effect on learning today. We heard about many causes of stress, its effect on us as learners and friends, and ways we can help combat it. We don't have any magic solutions, but hopefully we can find help with some of the strategies we were given. Speaking of stress... Have you done your Summer Reading? :) All incoming Freshmen were asked to read as much as possible this summer to keep your brains active, but we asked specifically for them to read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie. Have you finished the book? What did you think of it? We'll be referencing elements of that novel throughout the school year, so if you missed out, stop by the Cascade Library and check one out! |
