ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAY! Students are beginning their work on their argumentative essay about the value of a college education. They are responding to the prompt "Is College Worth It?" Students may argue any view on the topic, but must support their thinking with logical reasoning and accurate evidence, complete with basic citations. Before beginning work on the actual essay, students are being required to complete a detailed outline. The outline is a graphic organizer. It can be printed and completed by hand, or it can be filled in online and then printed. This outline is due NO LATER THAN Monday, December 4. The outline can be found here or in the link below.
Day 2... Welcome Back! I was quite glad to see all of the students back today. Attendance has been impressive. Students seem to be finding their way around, and engagement is high. We spent more time today getting to know each other. We started by doing a 10-minute writing activity explaining why each student came to school today: Why are you here? Students did a fabulous job of writing for the full time and of expressing their ideas. We discovered that students are at school for a number of different reasons, and that all of those reasons are valid. We also began talking about our class theme. An overarching concept this year will deal with the idea of Coming of Age. We started today by working with our table groups to try to come up with a definition of Coming of Age as well as providing examples. We will continue our discussion tomorrow by sharing out those examples. Also tomorrow, we will begin setting up our Interactive Notebooks. Students have been asked to bring an empty Composition Book that can be devoted strictly to English class. We will begin using it tomorrow and start setting it up for the rest of the year.
